Uncovering Personal Beliefs: A Journey of Self-Discovery

I was going through old papers and notes to declutter, and I found a piece of paper that caught my attention. My brain is always turning ideas over, and I frequently jot down ideas on scraps of paper. Typically, these thoughts are either a business idea or something related to personal development. I place a great deal of importance on having clear values and beliefs. These can change over time, but a well-thought-out mission/vision/belief statement typically holds independent of time. (skip to the bottom for the list)

As I was about to throw away this scrap paper, I saw the words “my beliefs” scrawled at the top. This paper was over a year old (I always date EVERYTHING); thus, my interest was piqued. Significant changes have occurred in my life in the last 18-24 months. A lot of personal growth. Breakthroughs. Setbacks. There are lots of positive and negative extremes, all blending together. So, seeing this “beliefs” note got me curious. I wanted to know my beliefs and, more importantly, if they held for me in the present.

Transcending Time: The Power of Anchored Beliefs

I’ll get to the point. The beliefs seemed oddly transcendent, as if another person wrote them. They rang more insightful now than when I wrote them. I must have regurgitated them from my subconscious memory - I likely did to some degree. I know these aren’t brand-new concepts (nothing ever is). All I know is that I need to keep these “tenets” more top-of-mind than I have been.

What encouraged me the most, is that I still agree with my previous words/thoughts. I’m not fulfilling these directives, but I know now that I have internalized those thoughts and they are guiding me. It’s worth reading them to keep them top-of-mind, but these thoughts inspire me to help people learn and grow to improve their lives, and those around them.

I hope they provide you with the same motivation and encouragement as I do.

Guiding Principles: Navigating Life with Purpose

My beliefs:

I believe most people do not reach their potential for personal growth, professional success, and happiness in their communities.

I believe most people are willing to do the work but don’t know where to start.

I believe good leadership is partnering and taking a vested interest in those you care about.

I believe good leadership requires sacrificing for those who look to your influence.

I believe we reach our potential only through working together.
